WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE?..

“The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness”  Abraham Maslow

Hope everyone’s new year has started well!

It’s a new year and many of us will have reflected on the year before and set those goals or resolutions for the year ahead (#2019Goals has been finding its way into those social media posts!).  Whilst you may be setting those goals or resolutions, or maybe you are looking to start the latest fitness trend, or try another diet (which I’m sure most of you are aware are unlikely to work – we’ve all been there done that, myself included!).  We seem to get sucked into thinking this will help us achieve happiness and fulfilment so cannot resist joining in.  It can become a very overwhelming time though and we may end up setting unrealistic goals, or wanting an unrealistic overnight change.  Whilst it is important for us humans to grow, we need to look after our wellbeing to do this successfully.  It’s about creating an ongoing lifestyle change to enrich our life.

A great way to start is by focusing on our WELLNESS;

“Wellness is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

The World Health Organisation

So where do you start in the vast world of wellness?

What does wellness mean for you?

It’s more than just the latest fitness craze, it’s about looking after your whole wellbeing and way of life, finding what is right for you on your journey.  There are plenty of areas you can work on to suit your lifestyle and needs, helping you improve mentally and physically which will support you in both your personal and professional life.

With the ever growing wellness industry it can be easy to get lost and unsure of where to get the best information.

“The wellness industry isn’t slowing down.  It is now estimated to be worth $4.2 trillion globally.”

Well To Do Global

How do I know the information I am getting is right for me?!

It’s confusing right….In a world where we are bombarded with information, especially in January, with what we should be eating, how this will make us lose weight, what we should be doing to our bodies, how we should feel – I think it’s more important than ever to know that we are being fed (and yes I’m including what our minds and bodies are fed!) credible information for us best to judge for ourselves what will work for us.

Where can I get credible and trustworthy information? How can I trust the information is right for me?  Where can I can get the information on the latest health products, fitness classes, wellbeing and holistic therapy?  WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE?

Whether you are at the start of your wellness journey or already in yours, I say look no further than ‘ALTERNATIVELY HEALTHY’.  When I first came across this destination I felt a huge relief that someone else understood what I was looking for, the things I wanted to know about, and that other people understood how I felt.  The content provided is full of advice from credible and trustworthy sources, they are the go to, no-nonsense, no BS, alternative to the wellness industry.  Plus there’s some eye-catching photography giving you Pinterest and Insta envy on their website.

Alternatively Healthy run their own events, and launched their first one in February 2018, which I was fortunate enough to attend.  I wasn’t disappointed, from the panel of guests sharing their stories and top tips, to the nibbles and drinks, a Q&A, and the opportunity to mingle and chat with the speakers.

It was at this event that I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Rhiannon Lambert (BSc MSc ANutr) aka Rhitrition, who specialises in eating disorders, sports nutrition and weight management.  Rhiannon has helped me fall back in love with food again, without restrictions and learning how to eat well.  My relationship with food, like most people has been one of restricting myself or feeling guilty.  I was fed up with either being too hungry or eating the wrong things leading to feeling lethargic or bloated.  I am now aware how I was eating was affecting my relationship with food and my body.  Instead I now enjoy nourishing food and never restrict myself, which I’m pleased to say is a much happier way of feeling and being.  With her four R’s Respect, Refuel, Rehydrate and Recover, her philosophy and approach to nutrition is an education not to be missed.
